How to Get to Chinatown from Changi Airport, Singapore By Train (MRT)

Singapore’s Chinatown is one of the best areas to do see in Singapore. While it promotes multiculturalism, Singapore is mainly populated by people of Chinese ethnicity. Thus, Singapore has a very rich Chinese heritage, and it all starts in Chinatown.

When people ask me about this particular Chinatown, I always say that it is one of the cleanest and most organized of its kind I’ve ever seen. This is a fitting description, seeing that it’s in Singapore, the cleanest and most organized city/country in the world.

Fortunately, getting to Chinatown is quite easy, thanks to Singapore’s efficient and extensive train network (MRT).

I would highly recommend that you take the MRT to most of the attractions in Singapore. It is the most efficient way of going about it. It is also surprisingly cheap!  Taking the MRT does mean that you will have to do some walking. But Singapore is small and built to be walkable. It is a great way to see the city and admire its modern and well-maintained infrastructure.

Travel Checklist: Do you have everything you need?

Here is a step-by-step guide on getting to Chinatown from Changi Airport:

  1. From the Arrival Hall, walk to the Changi Airport Station. Just follow the well-placed signs and you won’t miss it.
  2. Purchase your ticket at a machine at the station.
  3. You have the choice of buying a single journey ticket or an EZ Link Card, which you can top up and use for all your train rides in Singapore (isn’t that convenient?).

A single journey ticket is 1.78 SGD. The minimum top-up for an EZ Link Card is 10 SGD. Therefore, it can save             you some time if you plan on completing multiple MRT journeys while in the city.

  1. Board that train on the Green East-West Line, the one that goes to Tanah Merah Station.
  2. After two stops, get off at Tanah Merah Station.
  3. Board the train on the East West Green Line – the one that goes to Tuas Link Station.
  4. After 12 stops, get off at Outram Park Station.
  5. Walk less than 600 meters and you will reach Chinatown Heritage Center.

Take note that Outram Park Station is not the only station close to the Chinatown.

There is a Chinatown Station on the North-East MRT Line that you can also go to. If you are coming from Little India, Dhoby Ghaut, Clarke Quay, Raffles Place or Marina South Pier, the Chinatown Station is where you need to go to in order to reach Chinatown.

  1. I will arrive at 10:45 pm at Changi Airport. Is it still okay to ride an MRT going to Chinatown since my hotel is near Chinatown? If so, what is the nearest exit going to Chinatown? Thank you.
